とら【虎】

1 〔ネコ科の動物〕 a tiger; (雌) a tigress.

●虎がほえた. A tiger roared.

●虎の威を借る狐 a fox borrowing a tiger's authority; a small man acting arrogantly by hanging onto the shirttails of a powerful figure

・虎の威を借りて in borrowed plumes; under the umbrella of sb's influence

・虎の尾を踏む take a very great risk; do something extremely dangerous.

●虎を養って患いを遺す nourish a serpent in one's bosom

・虎を野に放つ let a tiger run loose

・虎を描いて狗(_いぬ)に類す. Try to paint a tiger but end up with something resembling a dog. | Try to act like an outstanding person but end up the fool.

●虎は死して皮を留め人は死して名を残す. When a tiger dies it leaves its hide; when a human dies, he [she] leaves his [her] name.

2 〔酔っ払い〕 a drunkard; a sot; 《口》 a boozer.

●虎になる get beastly [riotously, dead] drunk; get boozed up [boozy].
